What is palio di asti?

Palio di Asti is a traditional horse race that takes place in the city of Asti, located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The race has a long history dating back to the early 13th century, making it one of the oldest horse races in Italy.

The race is held annually on the third Sunday of September, and it involves ten horses representing the city's various contradas (neighborhoods or wards) which compete against each other in a three-lap race around a temporary track set up in the city's main square, Piazza Alfieri. The jockeys race bareback and have to complete the race as fast as possible without knocking over any of the obstacles placed along the track.

Palio di Asti is known for its colourful, traditional costumes and parades that accompany the race. The festivities begin a week before the actual race with events such as flag-waving, music performances, and feasting. On the day of the race, the city is filled with thousands of locals and tourists who come to witness the spectacle.

The winner of Palio di Asti is awarded a prize banner, which they proudly display in their local neighbourhood as a symbol of their victory over the other contradas. The race has become an important part of the city's cultural heritage, and it's deeply rooted in the local history and traditions.
